Million Book Project!

BRING BOOKS THIS SUNDAY (JULY 15)!

Purpose: To leverage the members and friends of the ELCA to flood a geographic area with books that encourage a passion for reading.

What is the process?
Get books to New Orleans in one of the following ways:

1) Donate using your credit card via this link: http://www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books.html
Through our partnership with Scholastic Books, get more books for your financial investment (4 books for every $15) and you don’t have to travel with books. Pass this link to all your friends and family. Put it out on facebook and on your own webpage – let’s go viral with this! Pick up your MBP sticker at the Gathering to wear so everyone knows you are part of the Million Book Project.

2) Bring books! Choose books from the list below and bring these books with you to New Orleans when you come for the ELCA Youth Gathering. Drop them off at the Convention Center when you register and pick up your sticker to wear so everyone knows you are part of the Million Book Project. Please do not bring used books. It is important for us to respect the list of books that are requested by the educators in Louisiana so sticking to this list is part of the MBP. The cost of books ranges from $2-$18 per book depending on your selection and if this is a paperback or hardcover book.

3) Order on Amazon before June 10! Use the book list on page 2 to order books and have them shipped for you. All orders must placed before June 10 and be labeled and addressed to the designated warehouse, according to the instructions found at www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books.html so that they get to the right place!

What happens next?
1. MPB Book Festivals - The books you bring will be sorted and boxed.
The boxes of books will be delivered to Book Festivals we are hosting all over
the city of New Orleans as part of the MBP on Saturday during the Gathering.
Any books not given away at the Book Festivals will be distributed to children
through the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) and Communities in
Schools (CIS) over the next few months.

2. MBP Reading Camps – The Gathering will host MBP Reading Camps at multiple sites during the Gathering. All the children attending these camps, in partnership with NORD, will receive books to takehome after practicing reading the books.

3. MBP Libraries – The Gathering will be building libraries in NORD centers and in local schools so that books can be made available throughout the year. Some of these libraries will expand to include Baton Rouge and other cities near New Orleans.

Holy Week at Bethany

Greetings!

Holy Week is an important time in the life of the church.  After journeying with Jesus through Lent, we celebrate his triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and continue with him to the cross (Good Friday) and the glorious resurrection (Easter Sunday).

I hope that you will join the Bethany family and our sisters and brothers in the South Conference as we make the Holy Week journey together.

-Rev. Darryl Thompson Powell

Palm Sunday (April 1)
Palm SundayPalm Sunday is always a wonderful time of celebration at Bethany.  We begin our 11 AM worship with a procession with palms, remembering Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  Weather permitting, the procession will take place outdoors as we travel up and down Jeffery Blvd.

The celebration continues with our Annual Choir Musical at 4:00 PM. This years theme is "He'll Make a Way!" Make sure you arrive early so you can get the best seats!

Holy Week Revival (April 2-4)
Monday - Wednesday of Holy Week we move over to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church (8500 S Maryland Ave) for their annual revival, which is always a powerful and Spirit-filled time.  This years revival schedule promises not to disappoint!  Devotions begin at 6:45 PM on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday the celebration begins at 6:30 PM with dinner. The revival begins at 7:00 PM each night.

Maundy Thursday (April 5)
Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday gets its name from the Latin translation of John 13:34 - "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" ("A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." -NIV). That new commandment is lived out on Maundy Thursday with a foot washing service at 6:30 PM, reminding us how Jesus showed loved to his disciples by washing their feet.

The Maundy Thursday service continues with our Seder meal at 7:15 PM, an African-American Christian adaptation of the Jewish Seder (Passover) meal. A freewill offering will be taken at the Seder meal.
Good Friday (April 6)
Good Friday crossesOn Good Friday we gather with brothers and sisters from the South Conference at the Lutheran School of Theology-Chicago (LSTC) to remember Jesus' suffering and death with the Seven Last Words of Jesus, seven short sermons by various pastors.

This service begins at 7:00 PM in the main chapel of LSTC, 1100 E 55th, Chicago

Vigil of Easter (April 7)
Easter VigilAugustana and LSTC's worshiping community will again join together to celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter.  It begins at 8:00 PM in the central courtyard of LSTC to light the new fire  and then will process into LSTC's chapel for the service of readings and baptism. After that there is a procession across the street to Augustana's sanctuary for the first Eucharist of Easter.  The vigil concludes with a festive dessert reception in the Augustana fellowship hall.
Easter Sunday! (April 8)
The empty tomb
Our Holy Week journey concludes with a incredible day of celebration!  It begins with a 5:30AM SON-rise Service at Rainbow Beach (79th and South Shore Ave). Yes, it's early, but there's nothing like welcoming the Son-rise with the sunrise over the lake.

Our morning continues at Bethany from 9:00 - 10:30 AM with an Easter breakfast prepared by the Men of Bethany.  The cost for the breakfast is $8/adult, $5/child (3 - 12 years old).

At10:00 AM(in the midst of the breakfast) the youth will present their Annual Easter Pageant.

At 11:00 AM we cap off the celebration by moving upstairs to the sanctuary for our Resurrection Sunday Celebration!

Indeed, Holy Week is an exciting time at Bethany.  We hope you'll join us for much of the celebration.

Peace!
